David Coulthard in Brno to check out the bikes

McLaren Mercedes driver, David Coulthard, broke away from his busy schedule in the Formula One World Championship to visit the MotoGP paddock and meet riders from the championship. The same tobacco manufacturer as sponsors the West Honda Pons team sponsors his McLaren, and Coulthard posed for photos alongside Loris Capirossi, Alex Barros and Sito Pons as well as the GP bikes. Coulthard was clearly extremely interested by the technology and the mechanics of bikes, asking questions of Honda Pons technical director Antonio Cobas about practically every piece of kit of the NSR500.

Coulthard confessed, ´This is my first ever visit to the MotoGP paddock, and the first time I have seen a bike live. However, despite not having been here, I am a long time follower of the sport.´ Talking about his past he added, ´Before I went into Kart racing, I was in motocross, so I actually started out on two wheels. I didn´t have the balance and talent required though so moved into Kart.´

The Scotsman, who currently lies in second position in the Championship spoke about the respect that his F1 colleagues have for their biking equivalents, ´There is a great deal of admiration for the bike riders. They are so exposed, and get the opportunity to display an enormous amount of skill and bravery, moreso than in F1. I especially like all the overtaking manoeuvres they perform, they create so much appeal for the sport.´ He admitted that he would love to be able to ride one of the bikes but that obviously the risks were too great for him to do so at the moment. Coulthard will watch the race from the West Honda Pons box and then will return to the UK in preparation for the race at one of the most testing F1 Grand Prix circuits, Spa, which takes place in Belgium next week.
