Ui blows hot in 125 first qualifying session

Youichi Ui enjoyed typically erratic fortunes in today´s first qualifying practice for the 125 class, recovering from two mechanical failures to take provisional pole position and a new pole record at the Estoril circuit. Ui dominated the time sheets throughout the session, despite having to push his Derbi back to the pit garage on two occasions, with Toni Elias struggling to improve his time from this morning´s free practice and Manuel Poggiali, Joan Olive and Lucio Cecchinello the only riders able to get anywhere near the Japanese flyer.

Ui´s final effort of 1´46.196 was almost a second quicker than his previous pole record set last season and 0.853 seconds faster than the Gilera of Poggiali, who lines up in second place on the provisional grid. 16 year old Olive´s third quickest time was the surprise result of the session and it was enough to knock Telefonica Movistar Honda Junior Team colleague Elias off the provisional front row as Aprilia veteran Cecchinello hung on to fourth.

Elias is joined on the second row by the third member of the exciting Spanish junior team, another 16 year old in Dani Pedrosa, in sixth, with Angel Rodriguez, also 16 years of age and also Spanish, in seventh. Simone Sanna completes the provisional second row in eighth.

Nobby Ueda crashed out, as did Alex de Angelis, but fortunately both riders escaped injuries and will be fit to ride in tomorrow´s final qualifying session.
