Abe beats pain to celebrate birthday

Norick Abe yesterday celebrated his 26th birthday despite injuries he suffered during a spectacular high speed crash in the first qualifying practice for the 500cc class. Abe, covered in bruises and nursing a broken finger, wasn´t really in party mood, but members of his team headed by owner Luis d´Antín went to visit him and presented him with a cake with 26 candles.

D´Antín asked Abe to step out of his motorhome and, when the Japanese star emerged at the door with his hand packed in ice, they all sang a rendition of Happy Birthday. Some of the team members were talking about a similar occasion when Abe celebrated his 100th Grand Prix by slapping a cake into his team boss´s face, and wondered if d´Antin would seek revenge. In the end, it was Abe who struck again, landing another perfect shot on target.
