Melandri heads all-Aprilia provisional front row in 250 as Katoh qualifies sixth

Melandri heads all-Aprilia provisional front row in 250 as Katoh qualifies sixth

Marco Melandri lead an expected Aprilia attack on 250 Championship leader Daijiro Katoh in this afternoon´s first qualifying practice, taking provisional pole as colleagues from the Italian factory completed the front row positions. Melandri´s team-mate Tetsuya Harada was second fastest, whilst home riders Fonsi Nieto and Alex Debon, of the Valencia Circuit Aspar Team, took the third and fourth positions on the provisional grid to delight the local crowd.

Those outstanding performances from the Spanish duo coupled with another solid qualifying session from the consistent Jeremy McWilliams, also of Aprilia, meant that Katoh was forced to settle for sixth place, just ahead of Aprilia privateer Roberto Rolfo. Katoh is under pressure to improve his starting position in tomorrow´s final qualifying session at a track known for it´s tight, twisty nature which makes it difficult to overtake.

Naoki Matsudo put his Yamaha in eighth spot to complete the second row, but with De Puniet, Battaini and Locatelli in ninth, tenth and eleventh place respectively the front half of the grid is once again dominated by the Noale marque. Sebastian Porto qualified in twelfth on the Yamaha.
