Debon makes his mark at his team´s home track

Spanish rider Alex Debon proved that the 250 class is liable to upsets, setting the fastest time of this morning´s second free practice session. Riding for the Valencia Circuit Aspar team on board an Aprilia, Debon showed that home advantage may be a deciding factor as the shuffle up for places on the grid gets under way this afternoon. Debon set a time of 1´37.028, inside the provisional pole of Marco Melandri and pipping Championship leader Daijiro Katoh to the fastest time of the morning with his penultimate lap.

Katoh had led for the majority of the session, putting in some consistently quick laps, with Melandri at the reins for large proportions too. These two followed Debon´s time, and then saw Fonsi Nieto, the teammate of Debon, close in behind them. Nieto has been in the spotlight recently with consistent performances which have brought him close to the podium regularly, Debon has managed a best of sixth in Germany this season, and a grid best ever of fourth at Suzuka. Second provisionally on the grid Tetsuya Harada was fifth and McWilliams was just behind.

This afternoon´s session promises to be very interesting indeed as the rain looks as if it will stay away for the time being and there will be a battle royale for places, with times still well outside Jacque´s pole of last year. With Debon and Katoh bettering Melandri´s time of yesterday in this free practice, anything could happen this afternoon and we are sure to see some thrilling on the edge riding.
