Elias thrills home crowd with another best pole at Valencia

Toni Elias made certain of pole position in this afternoon´s final qualifying session for the 125 class at Valencia. The Spanish youngster had set the provisional fastest time yesterday with a new best pole at the Ricardo Tormo circuit but delighted the home crowd by repeating the feat today under intense pressure from Simone Sanna, Lucio Cecchinello and Max Sabbatani.

A hectic finale to an intensely contested session saw a group of around fifteen riders circulating together on fast laps, completely reshuffling the grid in the dying seconds. When the dust settled the Italian trio of Sanna, Cecchinello and Sabbatani found themselves alongside Elias on the front row in second, third and fourth place respectively. Steve Jenkner and Dani Pedrosa contested front row positions but were relegated to fifth and eighth place respectively as Gino Borsoi and Nobby Ueda crossed the line right at the death to take sixth and seventh spot on the grid.

One man left out of the speed party was Manuel Poggiali, who lies just 13 points behind Championship leader Elias in the current rider standings. The San Marino youngster looked nervous and vulnerable to mistakes as he tried in vain to improve his provisional qualifying time, and he will now start from the third row in twelfth place.
