Capirossi steals the show with third pole of the season at Motegi

Loris Capirossi stole the show on the final day of qualifying with the fastest ever lap of the Motegi circuit by a 500 and pole position for tomorrow´s race. The Italian Honda Pons rider is joined on the front row by Brazilian team-mate Alex Barros, who qualified in third place behind Max Biaggi after an entertaining battle for top spot between the three riders. Valentino Rossi was unable to launch a successful pole attack and in the end was forced to settle for a front row slot in fourth position.

Kenny Roberts´ provisional pole time from yesterday was enough to seal an overall final grid position of sixth for the Suzuki rider when a mid-session crash put paid to his pole challenge. Roberts returned to the track but was unable to better his time and will start behind highest placed home rider Shinya Nakano in fifth and one place ahead of team-mate Sete Gibernau in seventh. The second row is a two-team affair, with Nakano´s Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Olivier Jacque lining up in eighth spot with a time which could have given him a front row spot if it weren´t for a mistake on the final corner.

Japanese Yamaha riders Ukawa, Haga and Abe qualified in 9th, 15th and 16th respectively whilst Suzuki wildcard rider Kagayama will start from 14th.
