Men in Black plan assault on front row positions after classy performance in practice

The West Honda Pons team of Alex Barros and Loris Capirossi have proved consistently able to challenge for the leading positions this season, and this morning they sent out the message that they intend to keep that consistency going here in Motegi. It was the Brazilian who took the fastest time of this morning´s 500cc second free practice session, and he did so just 0.008 seconds ahead of his teammate, who leads him in the Championship by just 20 points in their battle for bronze behind Rossi and Biaggi.

Barros´ time of 1´51.418 is still 0.5 seconds outside of Roberts´ provisional pole of yesterday, which in turn trails Biaggi´s pole of last year by over a second. Capirossi came in second behind Barros, with Championship leader Rossi just behind the two black leathered West riders. Home rider Shinya Nakano, who won here two years back in 250, came home fourth in the free practice session.

Three more riders finished quicker than provisional pole holder Kenny Roberts this morning, most significantly Max Biaggi, who in fifth position is poised to make an assault to claim his sixth consecutive pole in the afternoon´s qualifying session. Roberts´ teammate Gibernau, fresh from his Valencian victory took sixth just ahead of Frenchman Olivier Jacque on board the Gauloises Tech3 Yamaha.
