Marco Melandri out of the Qantas Australian Grand Prix

Italian youngster Marco Melandri is out of the Qantas Australian Grand Prix after failing to recover from injuries sustained in Motegi. Melandri took part in this morning´s free practice and this afternoon´s qualifying session but retired early both times because of the intense pain in his wrist and chest caused when he was thrown off his Aprilia at the Japanese circuit and then run over by Daijiro Katoh.

´Macio´ has been treated by Doctor Costa, who decided to put the wrist in a new, more stable plaster to try and speed up the recovery of the broken bone in his right hand. Melandri was able to run on the wet track this morning but explained that the hard braking necessary on the dry track made it imposible for him to withstand the pain.

Doctor Costa believes Melandri should not need surgery and could make his comeback next web in Malaysia. However, everything depends on how the injury heals over the next few days.
