Mick Doohan reflects on the best 500cc race of the year and the crowning of a new World Champion

Where do you start after a day like that? It was a fantastic race throughout and a dream come true for Valentino Rossi. He has won the Championship in his second year on a 500, just like he did in the other two classes and that really is an amazing achievement. For him to do it in my home country of Australia is an added bonus for me because this is the last race I´m going to be able to attend this year and I have been able to enjoy a very special day first hand.

There hasn´t been a race like quite that one all year and I think the last lap battle between Valentino and Max Biaggi was a fitting way for the title to be decided. It would still have been okay if Max had won the race and Valentino had come second, but it isn´t quite the same. Winning the race and winning the Championship is what it´s all about.

Biaggi rode a good race, there´s no doubt about that, and it looked like he was going to make a break at the end there. I could see Valentino´s determination though, there was no way he was going to let that happen. I really thought he had made his move too early by taking Max on the third from last corner but he held it together. I´m sure if that finish line was another 5 metres down the road then things might have been a little different, but it is where it is and that´s all that matters!

There will be a few celebratory drinks tonight with Valentino and his friends, and they deserve it. There´s a lot of people who have come out from Italy to see him and he didn´t let them down. The money they spent on the ticket out here will have been well worth it.
