Capirossi takes the initiative in Sepang

Loris Capirossi set a new pole record at the Sepang circuit to take top spot on the provisional grid for the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix in this afternoon´s first qualifying practice. The Honda Pons rider knocked Italian compatriot Max Biaggi off the top of the time sheets with a best lap of 2´05.637 after the chequered flag had been waved, beating the Yamaha man by 0.205 seconds.

Shinya Nakano continued his recent good form with the third fastest time of the session to put his Yamaha on the provisional front row ahead of the Honda of new World Champion Valentino Rossi. Garry McCoy put on a typically spectacular tyre sliding display and set the fifth fastest time of the afternoon to head a second row which also features Abe, Barros and Jacque in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Kurtis Roberts made a disappointing return to Grand prix racing, crashing out of the session on his first lap.
