Elias states intentions with new 125 pole record at Sepang
Toni Elias sent a defiant message out to anyone who has ruled out his 125cc title challenge this season, with provisional pole at Sepang this afternoon. The Spanish youngster trails Manuel Poggiali by 16 points with two races to go but set a new pole record of 2´15.358 at the Malaysian circuit to take the psychological advantage into tomorrow´s final qualifying session. Poggiali was eighth fastest today, his best lap 1.710 seconds slower than that of Elias.Youichi Ui, who also has an outside chance of the title, was second fastest at the end of a session which he dominated for long periods. The Japanese rider looked out of reach of the rest of the field until Elias took action. Max Sabbatani and Lucio Cecchinello also stepped up the pace but were unable to better Ui and complete the provisional front row in third and fourth place respectively.
