Ui not prepared to leave it to chance and seems ready to do his part

Youichi Ui followed on from yesterday afternoon´s provisional pole time to set the fastest time in this morning´s 125 second free practice session. The Japanese rider knows that only a win is good for him on Saturday morning if he is to have any chance of snatching the title from under Manuel Poggiali´s nose. He once again found some clear track this morning to set the fastest time on his 14th lap of 18.

The 45-minute long session was punctuated by traffic problems, both Elias and Pedrosa suffering as they ran on quick laps, but found themselves either being trailed or coming up against a group of riders wanting to get a tow off them. Eventually Manuel Poggiali, the clear favourite to take his first World title came home second behind Ui, with Simone Sanna and Lucio Cecchinello relegating the Spaniard Elias down into fifth position. Elias had been lapping with provisional front-row rider Andrea Ballerini, who showed his promise once again but also suffered due to a blocked track and ended up tenth.

Gianluigi Scalvini finished a respectable sixth place on his Italjet, ahead of Pedrosa, Sabbatani and Vincent, the Italian managing to avoid the trouble affecting riders ahead of him. Nevertheless, Ui had the best of the session, and his time of 1´59.397 will stand him in good stead in this afternoon´s qualifiers, given that it is just under a second quicker than his current pole time.
