L&M Derbi

L&M Derbi

Japanese Youichi Ui kept until the end all his chances to clinch the World Championship after starting from pole position. Manuel Poggiali´s 5th place made his effort useless and Ui has ended the championsip in second place after the rider from San Marino. Pablo Nieto took a risky decision and mounted intermediate tyres but it kept raining during the race.

1st YOUICHI UI

I did what I had to do, this is, to win the race. It wasn´t an easy race, as after 5 laps the tyres slipped like if I was on a 500. At the end Sanna pushed hard and I gave all my best to win, and I could do so because my bike had better acceleration. It´s pretty frustrating to win 6 races and score 7 pole positions and to lose the World Title, but I hope I´ll win it in 2002.

14th PABLO NIETO

I took a great risk as I mounted intermediate both back and in front, as that was the only way to surprise the rivals. At the start of the race things were going well but then it started to rain and the bike was impossible to ride. I scored two points and I think I couldn´t ask for more. This race ends a stage in my career and I want to thank all the people in the team who have helped me all this time.

GIAMPIERO SACCHI

We have a fabulous team and we´ve proven so today once more. We´re happy in Derbi for this second place in the World Championship and for having won six races, but also because the new World Champion is part of the Piaggio Group. We´re a very competitive team and there´s a great future ahead of us.
