Honda RC211V 4 stroke betters lap record in Sepang

Honda RC211V 4 stroke betters lap record in Sepang

Japan´s Tohru Ukawa improved his performance on the second day of HRC tests at the Sepang circuit today, as he bettered the lap record set by team-mate Valentino Rossi in the Grand Prix that took place at the Malaysian track in October. Ukawa, who was at the session alongside official test rider Shinichi Itoh instead of Rossi, completed 71 laps on the new RC211V, with a best of 2´05.39, over two-tenths of a second quicker than the existing lap record. He stated, ´I´m very, very happy with today, and to break the lap record. Everything ran just fine. We were testing tyres and some small modifications I was not looking for a lap time. What is important here is to keep the development of the machine moving forward. The bike is good here but we still have a lot of work to do.´

Shinichi Itoh, who is riding for the first time in Sepang, was only one sixth of a second behind his compatriot, and seemed somewhat surprised by his results, ´Very happy, and very surprised. My lap times are very good, considering I have only had two days at this track. The bike has made it easy, it works very well here. I´m pleased with the progress we´re making with the RCV.´

Daijiro Katoh continued his remarkable adaptation to the NSR500 and had a best time of 2´05.86, less than half a second behind Ukawa after 47 laps. He was a tenth quicker than Loris Capirossi, and well ahead of the Italian´s team-mate Alex Barros who could only manage 2´07.73 on his brand new 2002 NSR500. Jurgen vd. Goorbergh was unable to ride today due to mechanics not having time to repair the extensive damage to his bike, which came about after his heavy crash yesterday.
