Fonsi Nieto leads the way in the 250cc class

Spanish rider Fonsi Nieto was quickest out of the blocks in the quarter-litre category after producing a dominant display in the first IRTA tests of the season, held at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia. The Telefonica Movistar-Repsol YPF team rider lapped more than half a second under the pole time from last season's Marlboro GP of Valencia.

Nieto was understandably pleased at the results from the first direct confrontation with his championship rivals of the pre-season, 'I'm very satisfied with the way these three days of testing have gone because bit by bit we're making good progress as regards the chassis and the engine. We've carried on with the line of work we began at the last tests in Jerez. I tested a new front fork which worked pretty well, and we also tried a new shock absorber that we've just got to finish refining a little. At the next session in Portugal we'll carry on with our scheduled programme of tests.'

The manager of the Telefonica Movistar-Repsol YPF team, Jorge Martinez 'Aspar', was equally satisfied with the performance of his rider, 'Fonsi's results have been excellent, especially given that the weather has been so poor and so cold over the last few days. We've carried out some modifications on the chassis which gave us good results, but we've still got some work to do on the engine in order to improve corner speed. The times that Fonsi clocked though were fantastic.'

Fonsi Nieto and the rest of the 250 field will take to the track again tomorrow, for the second round of IRTA tests which take place at the Estoril circuit in Portugal.
