Luis d`Antin confirms Pere Riba to replace Criville

Luis d'Antin confirmed on Friday that Spanish rider Pere Riba will replace Alex Criville in his Yamaha squad for the 2002 MotoGP World Championship season. Riba has signed a contract until the end of the season to race alongside Japanese rider Norick Abe aboard the YZR 500 machine vacated by Criville due to medical reasons.

'I am very satisfied to have signed Pere Riba,' said d'Antin.. 'He is a mature and experienced rider which given the current stage of the preseason will be a very important factor if early results are to be obtained. He was in the battle for the Supersport so knows what being at the front is all about. Now we will be working hard on his adaptation to the team and the bike so that he is as prepared as possible for the first race.'

Riba makes the switch to Grand Prix racing from the World Supersport series, where he had been tipped as a title challenger after an encouraging preseason. He does have Grand Prix experience, however, having contested the 250 World Championship in 1995 after racing six times in 1993. 'I am very excited to be racing in MotoGP and to have been chosen to ride the Yamaha 500 in one of the factory's best teams,' said Riba. 'This is a very important personal gamble for me. In Supersport I was a candidate for the world title and I have given that up for a chance in MotoGP. I am at a good stage in my life, I have been offered an opportunity and I am not planning to let it escape. I have experience of 4 stroke machines which will be good for the future, but today I am faced with a different reality and I will concentrate on working hard for the rest of the preseason with the 500'.
