- With less than 3 seconds covering all the qualifiers this is the closest ever grid in the premier class in the 53 year history of motorcycle Grand Prix racing.
- This is the first time that Rossi has started from the front row of the grid at Suzuka.
- The last time a four-stroke started from pole in the top class was at the Grand Prix of Finland at Imatra in 1975 when Gianfranco Bonera started from pole riding the MV Agusta.
- If one of the four-stroke riders should win it will be the first win for a four-stroke machine in Grand Prix racing since Giacomo Agostini won the German Grand Prix in 1976 at the Nurburgring circuit .
