Melandri snatches provisional pole right at the last

Marco Melandri snatched provisional pole at the last after a session which had been dominated by his compatriot, Franco Battaini. The current joint-championship leader had held the upper hand after posting the quickest lap eight minutes into the session, and from that point he went on bettering his times, with Casey Stoner continuing to surprise by maintaining second place behind him.

The action hotted up in the final few minutes though, as all the riders launched their final attacks. Emilio Alzamora took over at the top just three minutes from the end, but it was Melandri who stepped up a gear to better the Spaniard´s time by two tenths of a second, with Frenchman Randy de Puniet finishing strongly to take fourth from Battaini.

Fonsi Nieto, who had posted the best time in the free practice this morning came home in sixth behind youngster Stoner. In total there were five Spanish riders in the top twelve finishers.
