Battaini confirms excellent early form by taking second pole of the season

Franco Battaini continued his exceptional start to the new season by taking pole position in the quarter litre class in the final qualifying session which compatriot Marco Melandri had begun as leader. In the sixteenth minute, Battaini stormed to top spot and maintained his advantage through to the final minutes. During the last part of the session, the Italian came under attack from Rolfo, Fonsi Nieto and De Puniet.

Fonsi took over at the top just five minutes from the end, but a minute later Battaini responded to snatch back pole, and did not then lose it again despite the Spaniard´s best efforts. The Italian finished four tenths ahead of Nieto, half a second ahead of Melandri and six tenths up on Porto who perfomed notably on his Yamaha.

Roberto Rolfo qualified in fifth just a tenth off the front row, whilst his team-mate Emilio Alzamora ended up in ninth after suffering a fall, although without serious consequences.
