Rossi secures his third consecutive pole of the season

Valentino Rossi preserved the first place with which he began the second and final MotoGP qualifying session. The Italian bettered his time of yesterday by over half a second, but didn´t really begin to attack until the second half of the session. In the final ten minutes, the World Champion stepped up another gear when Alex Barros began to close in on him. The Brazilian eventually finished some three tenths of a second down on Rossi, but took second from team-mate Loris Capirossi by just five hundredths of a second.

The front row of the grid was completed by another 2-stroke, that of Daijiro Kato who was the last rider to improve on his time from yesterday, only doing so in the final fifteen minutes. Behind the Japanese rider came Carlos Checa, who had to change bikes halfway through the session after experiencing mechanical difficulties. Along with the Spaniard, Ukawa, Biaggi and Jacque complete the second row for tomorrow´s Marlboro Grand Prix of Spain.
