McCoy misses Mugello test through injury

Garry McCoy has skipped Red Bull Yamaha tests at the Italian circuit of Mugello today, choosing to rest his broken leg ahead of the fourth round of the MotoGP World Championship at Le Mans next week. The Australian slide specialist has struggled to overcome the injury over the first three races of the year and his misery was compounded in Jerez when he was docked 5 seconds and relegated to fifteenth position for an overtaking infringement on the final lap. He has been replaced for the test by former Grand Prix rider Jean-Michel Bayle.

`Overall it was a very disappointing weekend for Garry and the team, even though the penalisation meant that John Hopkins moved up to thirteenth,´ commented Team Manager Peter Clifford. `He was in more pain in Jerez than he was two weeks previously in South Africa so that is not a good sign. We don´t know exactly how long his full recovery will take and it is an option for him to have an extended rest. In that situation then Jean-Michel Bayle would take his place but at the moment we are optimistic Garry will ride.´

The team´s preparations for Le Mans were not helped in Italy by steady rainfall throughout the day. However, they were able to complete some laps and were joined on the track by fellow MotoGP riders Regis Laconi (Aprilia) and Carlos Checa (Yamaha). For Checa it was a chance to try different engine settings, with some chassis testing scheduled for Thursday.
