´Fonsi´ aiming to keep his form after euphoria of Jerez

Last weekend was the most emotional of Alfonso ´Fonsi´ Gonzalez Nieto´s life, taking in his first ever Grand Prix victory in front of his home fans, but also the retirement of one of his great heroes, Alex Crivillé. In the aftermath of his win, Fonsi made a moving gesture by dedicating his success to the former 500cc World Champion, and now after going to the top of the championship standings, the 21 year-old Telefonica Movistar Repsol rider is hoping emulate the success of his compatriot.

Looking back on the race, Fonsi paid tribute to great support he received at the Andalusian circuit. ´It was a difficult race and there was a moment when I almost threw the towel in because Rolfo had got away a bit, but I saw all the crowds cheering me on, and shouting my name and I thought to myself, you´ve got to keep fighting to win this, and in the end it paid off. If I had support like that at every race it would make it so much easier.´

Fonsi was though quick to sound a note of caution after the jubilation of Sunday, despite taking provisional lead of the championship. ´Although I´m now top of the standings you have to remember there is still a very long way to go. I must keep collecting points, competing as hard as always and keeping a cool head in the races. Just as Alex Crivillé used to do in the past, I´ll have to keep fighting until the very end.´
