Mick Doohan looks ahead to the Polini Grand Prix de France

Unfortunately I am not able to make it up to Le Mans this weekend but looking at the time sheets I can only imagine that Valentino Rossi is having some problems with grip because otherwise you would be expect him to be heading the time sheets. To be fair to Carlos Checa, though, he has set a very quick lap and if it rains on Saturday he will be on pole position for just the second time in his career.

I believe that the reason the Yamaha has performed well today is also down to grip. It has slightly less horsepower than the Honda which means the wheel does not spin so much, and in a wet race this could prove to be very advantageous. As we all know racing is a different story than qualifying and over 28 laps it will be very difficult for Carlos or any of the other riders to stay with Valentino. He is a very tough competitor and if the problem is grip then you can guarantee his team of mechanics, who I know very well, will have it sorted in time for the race. In any case, it looks like we have a great race on our hands.
