Poggiali takes pole but ends session with a fall

125cc World Champion, Manuel Poggiali, took pole position from Arnaud Vincent in final qualifying, but ended the session on the floor after a crash whilst trying to secure his advantage. Vincent lost the provisional pole he had taken yesterday, and also a spot on the front row after qualifying fifth.

It was the Frenchman and the Gilera rider who took longest to improve their times of yesterday. Poggiali did so 11 minutes from the end, and Vincent some 4 minutes later, although he wasn't able to better the San Marino rider who took pole by by over two tenths of a second from his nearest challengers; Azuma, Pedrosa and Cecchinello.

Alex de Angelis ended up sixth, and was joined on the second row by Gino Borsoi. Pablo Nieto fell on the final straight whilst on a quick lap which would have put him third. His team-mate, Hector Barbera, also tasted tarmac when he was hit by Simone Sanna. Nieto eventually qualified seventh, and Rodriguez ninth, just ahead of Youichi Ui.
