Flying start to season lifts Rossi in all-time rankings

Valentino Rossi has enjoyed an almost perfect start to the season. The reigning World Champion has taken three wins and a second place from the first four races giving him a total of 95 points from the 100 on offer. As well as that, Rossi has also claimed 4 straight pole positions, and notched three of the four fastest laps in the year´s opening Grand Prix.

The 23 year-old now has 16 victories in the World Championship´s elite class. In his first season in the top category he took 2 wins, in his second 11 and he already has three to his name this year after gaining the same results in the first quarter of the season as last term. Rossi currently stands thirteenth in the all-time list of race wins in the blue riband category having moved above Alex Crivillé after his win in Le Mans. He needs a further two triumphs to pull level with Wayne Gardner, 3 to catch Barry Sheene and 4 to equal Freddie Spencer who lies in tenth place in the list.

However if the charismatic Italian´s statistics are impressive in the MotoGP class, his record in all categories of World Championship competition is equally as remarkable. In that list he occupies sixth place with 42 career victories, ahead of him are Read (48), Doohan (54), Hailwood (60), Nieto (62) and top of the pile Agostini (68).
