Melandri pulls clear to take comfortable win in Catalunya

Marco Melandri cruised to his second consecutive victory, and did so in authoritative style after leading from start to finish in Catalunya. For the first eleven laps Fonsi Nieto had gone with the Italian, but in the second half of the race, the Spaniard continued to lose ground as Melandri pulled away, and was then caught by a chasing group of Rolfo, Battaini and de Puniet.

With Melandri clear at the front, all interest centred on the battle for second, in which Rolfo eventually prevailed. Behind, Australian Casey Stoner produced an excellent performance and finished sixth following an impressive recovery after nearly falling on the first lap whilst challenging the leaders. Matsudo, Yuzy and Alzamora completed the second group of riders. Elias came home tenth after making a good start, but the young Spaniard faded in the later stages.

Fonsi Nieto maintains his lead at the head of the championship, with a six point lead over Melandri, and a 21 point advantage over Rolfo who consolidated his position in third.
