Melandri continues to claw back Fonsi in title chase

Marco Melandri continued his impressive recent form by storming to a convincing win in Catalunya last weekend. The Aprilia MS rider clinched his second consecutive victory in the quarter-litre class, and upped his season´s tally three wins after dominating the race at the Montmelo circuit from the front.

After taking victory in front of his home fans two weeks ago in Mugello, ´Macio´ repeated the trick on Sunday, but this time in front of the fans of his principle title rival, Fonsi Nieto. It was an exceptional performance from the 19 year-old who, despite starting from behind Nieto on the grid, wore down the field with a string of consistently fast laps which none of his rivals could live with. Consequently, Melandri has eaten further into Fonsi´s championship lead, and now sits ominously just six points behind the Spaniard.

Melandri said of his display; ´I tried to go flat out right from the first few laps, and then I upped the ante and saw that no one else could follow me. I realised it was time to make my attack, but I really needed to look after my front tyre because the rear one was sliding anyway. We did a lot of good work after Mugello, especially on the suspension, which meant we were able to make best use of the tyres. We're beginning to get results, and the bike's going well now, and I feel I can ride it much more effectively´.
