Melandri completes hat-trick as Elías takes first 250 podium

Marco Melandri clinched his third successive victory in Assen, after ultimately winning in authoritative style. Spaniard Toni Elíastook his first quarter-litre class podium finish, at the track which saw his first career victory in the 125 category last term.

It was Elías who took the hole-shot, and led for the first lap, but Melandri moved ahead a lap later. The Italian, Spaniard and Frenchman Randy de Puniet formed a breakaway group which continued to distance themselves from the rest, but just as he was beginning to put Melandri under real pressure, de Puniet fell on lap 8. After that Melandri lapped on his own at the front, while Elías did likewise in second, and it was Rolfo who escaped from a group including Fonsi, Porto and Aoki to claim third. Porto eventually ended up fourth ahead of Nieto and Aoki. Casey Stoner staged a dramatic recovery after a bad start, and came home eighth.

Thanks to his win, Melandri now moves ahead of Fonsi Nieto in the championship standings. The Italian has an 8 point lead over the Spaniard, and a 24 point advantage over compatriot Rolfo in third.
