Stephane Mertens wins the BMW Boxer Cup race in Assen

Belgian rider Stephane Mertens was triumphant in the BMW Boxer Cup race at Assen, which took place before the Gauloises Dutch TT got underway. It was a hard-fought race right from the beginning, with a group of 8 riders battling it out for victory.

The lead group was made up of the usual favourites in the competition including Hoffmann, Mertens, Hinterreiter, Legrelle, Cristobal, Fuchs and Panichi. The top positions changed hands with regularity, although Mertens did spend the majority of the race at the head of the field. Over the final laps the fight for victory heated up, but it was Mertens who prevailed, just edging out Hoffmann and Legrelle. Lagrive came home fourth and Fuchs fifth.
