Nieto holds on for fifth pole of season ahead of Melandri

Fonsi Nieto picked up his fifth pole position of the season despite the fact that neither him nor title rival and championship leader Marco Melandri were able to improve their provisional times from yesterday. The Aprilia pair both lapped around half a second slower than in the first qualifying session but remain on the top two places of the grid for the Cinzano Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.

Behind Fonsi and Melandri the fight was on to take the final places on the front row. Argentinean rider Sebastian Porto and Frenchman Randy De Puniet dropped from their provisional places to make way for Italian pair Roberto Locatelli and Roberto Rolfo, who came within 0.5 seconds of the pole time set by Nieto.

Porto ended up back in sixth place, behind Franco Battaini and ahead of De Puniet. Alex Debón completes the second row after a final session in which eight riders failed to improve their provisional efforts.
