Swiss youngster climbs first steps of MotoGP ascent

The average age of the 125 World Championship was lowered still further this weekend by the entry of Swiss teenager Thomas Luthi. The 15 year old took his first tentative steps on the long road to MotoGP as a replacement for Czech rider Jakub Smrz on Friday. Luthi stood on top of the podium in a 125cc German Championship race in Salzburg six days ago, although he has his sights set on the more modest objective of qualification for the Cinzano Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland this weekend.

`It is totally different to the German or European Championships - the standard is on a completely higher level,´ said the youngster. `It is nice to be on the same track as people like Youichi Ui and Manuel Poggiali, but I have no time to enjoy that because they pass me so quickly. Really I am only interested in the time sheets and at the moment they are at the top and I am at the bottom. I am just concentrating on riding my own way and trying to get close to the other guys on the track. My aim for this weekend is to qualify for the race and we can take it from there.´
