Pere Riba hopes to be fit for Brno

Two weeks after he sustained a fracture of the left tibia during Saturday practice in Donington Park, Pere Riba is now beginning with his rehabilitation programme. He has just came back to Barcelona after he visited Dr Angel Villamor. Since Riba has accepted the challenge offered by Luis d´Antin earlier this year - to ride Alex Crivillé´s bike, he had a hard time, with too many injuries.

The Spaniard said : ´It´s bothering of course, but you have to deal with it or throw the towel, and I won´t do that. It´s a shame as I was getting better and better ; I improved slowly and I was more comfortable with the bike every time I rode... before the last crash. But there´s no need whining. I have to do my best to be fit very soon and to get back on track´.

Riba has just begun his rehabilitation process in his house in Matadepera, near Barcelona : ´I´m happy to see how my condition improve. I underwent surgery a fortnight ago and I´m already walking again, with crutches. I can´t push on my foot, as I have to wait a few more days, but a person will come to help doing exercises. I also have to work out my back as all I did recently was having rest´.

Riba´s 2002 campaign has been hampered by crashes and injuries : he crashed in the first race of the year, in Suzuka, and sustained an arm injury. In Jerez, he couldn´t complete more than three laps... Later, he had to miss the Polini Grand Prix of France in order to recover and was back in Mugello. His last crash, in England, meant he had to miss the races held at Donington Park and at the Sachenring. Riba now hopes to have fully recovered for the next Grand Prix : ´I don´t know if I´ll be 100% ready, as this kind of injury needs a long time to recover. For example, footballers have to wait about five months... but our sport is different and I won´t miss any step, but I think I´ll be able to ride in Brno´.

Before Brno, Pere Riba will enjoy a few days with his family in Chiclana, in the southern Spain, and he will share his time between the beach and his rehabilitation programme.
