Olivier Liégeois talks about Masao Azuma´s disappointing season

Winner of two races and fifth in last year´s World Championship, Masao Azuma was expected to be seen among the front runners this year, but technical problems hampered his 2002 campaign. After the halfway mark of the season has been hit, the Tribe by Breil - Liégeois Compétition rider is lying in 12th, with only 46 points and a fourth place as his best result of the season.

Olivier Liégeois, director of the eponymous team, expressed his views about the problems with the Bridgestone tyres and the Honda NSR125 : ´Since the start of the season, we have been struggling with the tyres. We didn´t manage to get a consistent tyre for the race. There´s also an engine issue, as our engine isn´t as powerful as the Aprilia, despite the evolutions brought since last year´. $$$

The former GP rider explained how those problems affected the Japanese´s confidence and motivation : ´Masao had a bad streak at the beginning of the season, as he was disappointed by the performance of the bike. We talked about it in France and it gave him a slight boost, he did a great race there. But as a rider, it´s very hard to keep fully motivated when the machine isn´t as quick as the best of the class´.

The last part of the season may prove tough, but Masao Azuma enjoys the summer break to come back in his home country, and in the mean time, have a meeting with the Honda engineers in order to sort out his problems.
