Kato and Edwards take Suzuka 8 Hour win

MotoGP rider Daijiro Kato and team-mate Colin Edwards raced to victory at the 25th edition of the Suzuka 8 Hours, held at the Japanese circuit on Sunday. Kato and Edwards brought home their VTR1000SP-W twin cylinder Honda ahead of fellow Cabin Honda riders Tadayuki Okada and Makoto Tamada. The Sakurai Honda team of Alex Barros and Yuichi Takeda completed a magical Honda 1-2-3 with a fine third place finish. All three teams completed 219 laps, a new race record.

It was Kato´s second victory in the famous series, making it six in a row for Honda, whilst Edwards topped the illustrious podium for the third time having been called up as a late replacement for the injured Tohru Ukawa. Barros boosted MotoGP representation at the event by setting the fastest lap of the race after starting from pole position.

`I was riding longer today than the previous 8-hour races I´ve done but I was not as tired as I expected,´ said Kato afterwards. `However, when it started to rain during the final session I was anxious, because it was my first night race and the track condition was unstable. I checked the difference with Tamada on my pit board and controlled the pace. I am really happy that we won the race.´
