Alex de Angelis still celebrating his first podium

It is now over two weeks since Alex de Angelis picked up his first ever podium appearance in Germany, but the youngster from San Marino is still celebrating. Having made his debut back in 1999 the 19 year old has taken longer to adapt to Grand Prix racing than some of his teenage peers, but admitted that success was worth the wait.

`It was a beautiful moment and a great emotion´, grins Alex, reliving the excitement of Sachsenring all over again. `It was made more worthwhile because I really deserved it – I was ten seconds clear of third place. The race panned out like many others in the 125 class, with the final positions very uncertain until the final couple of laps, but I knew how to control my aggression. The celebration afterwards was unbelievable – my team were delirious! This year they have worked very hard for me and have been dedicated to providing me with the best possible material to race´.

De Angelis has used the summer break to cast an eye over the first half of the season, and he is satisfied with what he has seen. ´Overall it has been a positive year so far although I must admit I have not reaped as much as I have sown. What I mean by that is that there have been a few occasions where all our hard work has gone to dust, like in Jerez when Poggiali knocked me off right at the end of the race, or in Le Mans when I crashed out of second place. But in general things are a huge improvement on last year and I have no regrets´.

If the first half of the season has left a bittersweet taste, the youngster now plans to use the time off to get some well earned rest and continue his progression over the next few races. `I won´t be doing anything special during the break. I´ll stay in San Marino, which is a holiday for me anyway and I can go to the beach every day because Rimini is ten minutes from my house. In the past my performance has always improved in the second half of the season so I am hoping for good things, like an improved position in the championship and even my first win. I am aimingfor as many podiums as possible because I am in eighth place and to improve one or two positions would not make such a big difference´.
