Brno sees end of podium streak for Rossi

Valentino Rossi´s rear tyre problems, which forced his retirement from the Gauloises Grand Prix Ceske Republiky yesterday, also ended his streak of 13 consecutive podiums in the top class. The Italian had not finished below second place since the 23rd September 2001, when he finished back in eleventh in a wet race at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia. Rossi hit back after that disappointment to win the remaining four races of the season and seal the title.

He followed on this season with eight wins and a second place, bringing his total consecutive podiums to thirteen and taking his total win tally in the premier class to 21. Despite his Brno disappointment, Rossi still needs just one win to equal John Surtees, Kenny Roberts and Geoff Duke in the all-time ranking of total wins in the series and a further two to level with Wayne Rainey. The Honda rider´s effort of seven consecutive wins leaves him seventh overall in this particular historical ranking, headed Giacomo Agostini on twenty wins followed by Mike Hailwood on twelve.
