Toni Elías making consistent progress in rookie year

Toni Elías is making a clear and comprehensive progression in his first season aboard a quarter-litre machine, as is demonstrated by the statistical information compiled ahead of the Grande Premio Marlboro de Portugal. Just taking into account the results from the last four races, at Assen, Donington, Sachsenring and Brno, Elías has been the second best rider behind series leader Marco Melandri.

Third place finishes at Donington and Brno, as well as second place at Assen and sixth at Sachsenring contribute to a points haul of 62, bettered only by the 100% record of Melandri. The main man to suffer from Elias´ upturn in fortunes has ironically been his team-mate Fonsi Nieto who has picked up just 57 in the same period and has drifted to 37 points behind Melandri in the overall championship standings. Elías is now fourth in the series, 25 points behind Roberto Rolfo.

The progress made by Elías over these last four races is also impressive when compared to his early season form. The youngster has clocked up 22 points more from the last four races than he did from the first six.
