Possible combinations for Marco Melandri to become World Champion at Sepang

Marco Melandri has the power of mathematics on his side this weekend as he looks to become the 250cc World Champion at the Gauloises Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The Italian holds a 52-point advantage over Fonsi Nieto and must keep it to 50 or above when the dust settles at Sepang on Sunday afternoon to make sure the Spaniard has no chance of catching him over the final two rounds at Phillip Island and Valencia.

If Melandri finishes ahead of Nieto he will be World Champion, but not if he is behind and the Spaniard is on the podium. Below third position Melandri can afford to finish behind Nieto by one place in the top five and by two places in the remaining fifteen points-scoring positions. If neither rider scores any points at all, Melandri will also be World Champion.
