Checa celebrates 30th birthday with surf lessons at Phillip Island

Marlboro Yamaha Team´s Spanish rider, Carlos Checa, today celebrated his thirtieth birthday, as he spends a couple of relaxing days on Australia´s Phillip Island. Having made the journey down from Malaysia on Sunday evening into Monday morning, Checa was well rested, and it was lucky he got that chance, as he more than exerted himself in the sea with a surfing lesson from local pro-surfer Glyndon Ringrose, an ex-World tour rider.

´It´s a great way to spend a birthday here, the weather is quite good and the surf is good too. I came here last year with my brother, and to have Glyndon here as a teacher this time is great, and I seem to be doing quite well.´ Having been presented with a special birthday cake delivered on a surfboard by Ringrose, the affable racer then took to the waves for an afternoon of fun at Smith´s Beach, just round the coast from the Phillip Island raceway. Checa is a yearly regular at the beach, and this time it took him no time at all to get back into the swing of things as he picked up a wave almost immediately and coasted onto the shore. The rest of the day Checa spent with his friends, before going out to celebrate with a meal alongside his team.
