Fonsi Nieto can be satisfied with 2002 campaign

Fonsi Nieto would have like to end the season in style, with the possibility to fight for the title in front of his home crowd in Valencia, host of the last round of the 2002 Championship. But to do so, Nieto first had to cross the line ahead of Marco Melandri in Phillip Island. After a hard fought race against the Italian, the Spaniard lost the chance to defend the title for seven milliseconds.

Despite his understandable disappointment, Fonsi Nieto can be satisfied with his 2002 campaign, his first season aboard an official bike. Fittingly, he took his first win at his home Grand Prix in Jerez and also won in Le Mans, Estoril and Malaysia. Within 15 races, he made 9 rostrum appearances, as he added two second places and three third places to his four wins. His most impressive performances were in qualifying, as he clinched nine pole positions so far. There´s one race left to allow him to equal Anton Mang´s record of 10 pole positions in one season.

Far from being obsessed by figures, Fonsi Nieto promised to put on a good show for the last race of the season : ´I can be satisfied with this runner-up title. It´s a great start on the official bike. Now, there´s only the Valencia race remaining. I´ll try to enjoy the race and win the race in front of my fans´.
