Regis Laconi to join the 100 club

Regis Laconi returns to the scene of his greatest career moment this weekend as he celebrates a century of Grand Prix starts. The Aprilia man will become the seventeenth MotoGP rider to join the 100 club, having contested 70 races in the top class, 28 in 250 and just the one in 125, when he made his World Championship debut as a wildcard in the 1992 French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours.

After winning the 250cc European Championship in 1994, he entered the Grand Prix arena as a full-time rider for the 1995 season riding a 250cc Honda for the Equipe De France. After another season in the 250cc class riding for the Tecmas Grand Prix Team he moved to the 500cc class for 1997 riding a V-twin Honda with the same team. After scoring his best result of the year at the final round in Australia, finishing in fifth place, he was signed to ride for the Red Bull Yamaha WCM Team for 1998. .

It was with the WCM squad that he took his first, and so far only, win at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in 1999. Chances of a repeat victory this weekend are slim as Laconi completes a debut year of development aboard the four-stroke Aprilia RS Cube.
