The 125cc World Championship in 2002 had its customary number of protagonists and emerging heroes. One of the most combative and eye-catching performances came from 18 year old Alex de Angelis, who made giant strides in the Safilo Oxydo Race squad alongside team manager Lucio Cecchinello, finishing the season in ninth place overall with 87 points.

´It has been a positive, progressive season, but if I look at it in detail I can´t help but feel that I didn´t get the reward my work deserved,´ says the youngster from San Marino. `I got the best result of my career with second place at Sachsenring, but I am sure that with a bit more luck I could have had another two or three podiums. On the last lap at Jerez I crashed when Poggiali ran into me and I had a podium guaranteed. Then in the second part of the season there were a few other factors which affected my form´. ´At times I wonder what might have happened if it wasn´t for bad luck. The 2002 season was important because I have gathered a lot of experience and now I have more confidence in my ability. I have shown myself and everybody else that I can be up there competing with the best and aspiring for the top. My objectives for next season will be higher and I hope that the hard work this year will contribute to that´. De Angelis is hot property, but he revealed that he has still not decided his exact future. ´I have still not signed any deal or accepted any offers. I expect to know something in the next few days but one things is for sure – I will be riding in 125 on an Aprilia´.
