Three World Champions to contest 2003 title

Next year´s 125cc World Championship will see three riders looking to recover a crown they have already previously held. Reigning World Champion Arnaud Vincent will defend the number one plate for KTM, after winning it with Aprilia, whilst Emilio Alzamora and Roberto Locatelli return to the class to try and repeat their title winning feats of 1999 and 2000 respectively.

In the past the inclination for 125 World Champions has been to step up to the 250 class, although this trend has been bucked in recent seasons. Poggiali took the unusual step of defending his crown this season after winning the title in 2001, as did Alzamora in 2000. Locatelli did make the step up in 2001 but he has failed to make the impression he had hoped for after two seasons in the quarter-litre class.

Other riders to have defended the number one plate in 125 include Sakata, after taking his second title in 1998 just as he did after his first title in 1994, and Haruchika Aoki in 1996 – the last time three World Champions coincided in the class, with Aoki joined by Sakata and ´Aspar´.
