125cc riders at Jerez for first time in 2003

A fair number of 125cc riders were at the Jerez circuit today, for the first of three days´ testing in their opening session of this year. Emilio Alzamora tested his new Derbi machine on a GP circuit for the first time, after having ridden it briefly at the Almeria track towards the end of last year. The Spaniard has a hefty schedule ahead of him to bring the bike back up to speed, `This is the first intense test of the pre-season. Today I have already tried many different things and tomorrow and Saturday I will be working on getting a solid set-up for the bike.´ Sharing a pit garage with the ex-World Champion will be young Spanish prodigy Jorge Lorenzo, as well as Stefano Bianco who makes his first showing as a Gilera rider.

One of the title favourites, Dani Pedrosa, began his year in Jerez too, however he was of course riding his familiar blue Honda. `At the moment we are riding with last year's material,´ said the Spanish rider who is still only 17 years old, `Because the new stuff is still not ready. I was eager to ride the bike today and get things going once again´.

Also amongst the debuts this weekend, one of the most interesting combinations was the arrival of Casey Stoner into the 125cc class. Last season he was the youngest ever campaigner in 250, but this season he will ride an official Aprilia 125, today using that of his team-mate and team boss, Lucio Cecchinello. Italians Stefano Perugini and Max Sabbatani made their first appearances alongside each other, as they ride out of the Team Abruzzo garage this year.

Finally, France´s latest hope to come in to the World Championships, Mike Di Meglio, today celebrated the 15th birthday which allows him entry to the 125 class. Di Meglio, who surprised everybody when he made the podium at the penultimate round of the CEV Fortuna Spanish National Championships in Valencia, rode his new Aprilia for the first time today.
