Poggiali makes his debut on official Aprilia

San Marino´s Manuel Poggiali rode his brand new 250 Aprilia for the first time at a test session in Jerez today. The ex-125cc World Champion will compete in the quarter-litre class for the first time this season, and will dedicate the next three days to familiarising himself with his new machine. Obviously the first step for the ex-Gilera rider is to get used to the superior power of his new bike, after having ridden a 125 in the World Championships since 1999.

Another of this year´s official Aprilia riders in the class, Randy de Puniet, was also supposed to be out on the Andalusian track. However the Frenchman, who will ride for Lucio Cecchinello's team in 2003, still does not physically have a bike, with Aprilia not handing out their new machines until the end of the month. Poggiali was not using his new bike, but those with which Marco Melandri won the title last season.
Chaz Davies also took to a 250 machine for the first time, after signing up for the Aprilia Germany team alongside Dirk Heidolf. The young Briton made his debut in the championships last year on a 125 supplied by the Matteoni team, but makes the step up to 250 still aged just 15. ´My objective is still to learn as much as I can, as quickly as possible. Riding in 250 is a big challenge for me and I am very excited about it,´ said the Welsh youngster. Sweden's Johan Stigefelt and the Australian promise Anthony West are also in Jerez this weekend, after they had their first contact with their new team at the end of last year.
