Sebastián Porto ready to return from Argentina

Sebastián Porto is currently packing up his belongings in his native Argentina as he prepares to return to Europe and begin his preseason programme with the Telefónica Movistar Jr. Team directed by Alberto Puig. The 24 year old has spent the winter period in his home town of Rafaela, whilst many of his quarter-litre rivals have been clocking up the kilometres on the other side of the world – particularly the factory Aprilia riders and Roberto Rolfo, who like Porto will ride an official Honda RSW.

`Myself and Roby will be on identical bikes but in different teams´, explains Porto. `Obviously I would like to have been testing but it has not been possible yet. There is still plenty of time to run up the kilometres and prepare the bike for the start of the championship in April. I will be heading for Barcelona very shortly and then on to Jerez for the first IRTA test. I haven´t been on a race bike since the last GP of 2002, which is more than three months now, and I am very much looking forward to getting back on the track´.

Despite his laid back approach, the former Yamaha rider, who finished fifth overall last season, is aware of the importance of proper preparation. `It is one of the most important times of the year and this season I have to adapt to a new bike, which takes time,´ he says. `I have to learn its strengths and weaknesses, test different elements and, above all, find its limits. I am convinced, though, that the RSW is going to be a competitive machine and I want to get to work on is as soon as possible. After the IRTA tests we hope to get a couple more sessions in to sort out the set-up and make sure we arrive at Suzuka in good shape. I have waited a long time for an official ride, now I have it with Honda and to be chosen by Alberto Puig – who is strict about his riders – gives me great pride´.

With the cold weather still taking hold of much of Europe, Porto is now enjoying his final few days of Argentinean summer. `I am well into my physical training programme, with gym work, cycling and jogging, but of course there is always time for the pool and a bit of sunbathing. The weather is great here!´.
