Jerez continues under rain curse for IRTA 125 test

One of the hottest European towns in summer-time, Jerez has had its fair share of rain this winter, with usually one or other of the teams from the MotoGP World Championship in attendance. On the first day of the IRTA 125cc Test at the southern Spanish town today, the dark clouds, which have plagued it throughout recent weeks returned, and the subsequent downpours stopped any real action on the track at around three o´clock this afternoon.

With the only team absent from the tests being the brand new KTM outfit, this first session is seen as a reliable insight into what the season holds in store. It will have been no surprise therefore to many onlookers to see home-rider Emilio Alzamora topping the standings by the end of the day. Overnight rain prevented much riding before eleven o´clock, and it was the ex-125cc World Champion, who returns to the class with Derbi for 2003, who made the most of the dry track.

Youchi Ui, who left Derbi to ride an Aprilia this year, was second fastest, with local knowledge pushing Hector Barbera into third ahead of the relatively unknown quantities of Alvaro Bautista, Fabrizio Lai and Simone Corsi. Lucio Cecchinello and Casey Stoner both took deliveries of their brand new Aprilia machines today, and will be hoping, as will the rest of the riders, for brighter weather tomorrow to test their 2003 bikes.

Official times:
Alzamora: 1.53.759, Ui: 1.53.876, Barbera: 1.54.713, Bautista: 1.54.740, Lai: 1.55.570, Corsi: 1.55.631, De Angelis: 1.55.741, Di Meglio: 1.55.761, Stoner: 1.55.770, Dovizioso: 1.55.955
