Aprilia rider Franco Battaini has returned to Italy after his crash in Jerez and now starts his rehabilitation to get back on the bike as soon as possible. After the accident the Italian is trying to shake off his physical problems in order to be ready for the first GP of the season in Japan on April 6th. Battaini suffered a triple fracture of the foot in a fall at the first IRTA test of the season last week.

`It was a stupid crash´, explained the Campetella rider. `We used a tyre that was too hard for the track conditions when we should have gone for a softer compound - I was on the floor before I knew it. It is a real shame because we had done a lot of testing, something like forty laps, and we had the second best time. I watched the chrono in the following days and there were only six riders who were faster than me, this demonstrates that the bike is very good. I have gelled a lot with this machine and have a lot of confidence riding it. I also feel that I can go faster.´

$$$ After initial medical checks the 30 year old was told he will be laid-up for a period of 20 days but, upon returning to his house, has started some light physical exercise that will help him to retain his fitness: `Dr Costa has prepared a light protective cast for my foot that also allows me to swim, for the moment this is the only exercise I can make. But I will be ready for the first race of the year´, explained the Italian.

Battaini will miss the second IRTA test in Estoril that begins tomorrow for the riders of the 250 category and MotoGP. The crash in Jerez has also stopped him participating in the Triathlon of Brescia, that he had been working towards for the last few weeks: `I have had to pull out because it was due to start on the 9th of March and it will be too soon. Also I am not sure if I will attend the Aprilia test in Mugello, because close to these dates I have to be working hard to make sure I can get to Japan. The latter is obviously is more important because it is the first round of the Championship; if I do not encounter any complications then I will be there for sure.´
