Phil Read adds to the emotional tributes for Barry Sheene

British racing legend Phil Read, who won seven World Championships in the 125, 250 and 500cc classes, has added his respects to the emotional tributes flooding in for the late Barry Sheene:

`Barry´s great impact and contribution to motorcycle racing has been like no other rider from the sport we love,´ said Read, who is pictured (far right) with Sheene, Angel Nieto, Kenny Roberts and Geoff Duke at the MotoGP Legends ceremony at Donington Park last year. `His exciting racing and high-speed life-style helped generate greater public interest in bike racing from around the world. Over three decades I have been quietly impressed, thrilled and amazed by his single-minded displays of courage, guts, determination and skill to succeed against the odds. With the passionate support of family throughout his career, to whom I pass my deepest sympathy, he was a winner in life and on the racing tracks.´

$$$ `I have known him well, encouraged, admired and cursed him from the time, as a cheeky ten year old kid, he jumped on my prized Manx Norton at the T.T., to the time we shook hands at Donington Park last year. It was there that his great experience and professionalism showed he was the real `Master of Manx´s´, on his `own´ Norton. His great showmanship and masterful riding at the Goodwood Revival, he knew was his `grand finale´ and was his testament to life as the greatest showman in motorcycle racing. I am, together with many thousands of his fans, sincerely shocked and distressed by his untimely death, for which his mental strength and commitment over the last nine months to overcome the big `C´ is a wonderful example to us all.´
